Staff asks planning commission to research higher noise limits for ID‑4 data‑center zone

City planner Shauna Talbot told the Nephi City Planning Commission on Jan. 14 that staff will research proposed changes to Title 10 provisions for the ID‑4 data center zone to address maximum noise limits.
Talbot explained that the relevant code language in NCC § 11.6.12(A)(5)(h)(1‑4) applies to industrial zones and that "the decibel is so low and it won’t meet the industrial noise that Nephi City has currently," creating a concern for potential data‑center applicants and enforcement. Staff asked the commission for direction to gather additional data and return with suggested amendments specific to the ID‑4 zone.
No motion or vote was taken on the proposed code change at this meeting; staff requested time to research technical noise standards and comparative municipal code language and to bring a redlined proposal back to the commission for review.
