Council approves one-time five-month extension and temporary tax waiver for two tenants

Baldwin City Council voted to offer both downtown tenants a one-time, short lease-extension option that preserves their current base rent through Dec. 31 and waives property taxes for that extension period.
A councilmember proposed extending the current base rent for five months to allow tenants time to consider the new multi‑year leases or to look for alternate space. The motion specified the extension covers base rent only (no property-tax obligation for the city during that extension) and that no subsequent lease offer would be made to the tenant under that extension option. The motion passed after discussion about statutory constraints: the city attorney reminded the council that a house bill taking effect July 1 will require three council members to approve any property-tax waiver in future contracts.
The extension option is available to both the bullpen tenant and the EDC tenant; staff will prepare the extension documents. Councilmembers said the short extension is intended to be a one-time accommodation because the parties lacked the six-month notice the standard lease template otherwise requires.
