Residents and councilors used the public-comment period and the utility-rate discussion to revisit renewable-energy options for Baldwin City. Council and residents discussed a possible municipal 5‑megawatt solar project, the city's one-megawatt facility under contract and recent changes in federal incentives.
"The industrial tax credits are still out there," resident Glenn Rodden said. "You can still get 40 to 60% of that tax credit... you need the land and you need the money and all that good stuff." Rodden urged the council to consider whether acquiring the existing 1-megawatt project or pursuing larger projects with available credits could stabilize long-run power costs.
Councilors acknowledged the potential benefits of municipal renewable projects but also cited barriers: land availability, timing of tax-credit windows, and maintenance/contract issues with the existing 1‑MW installation (inverters and upkeep were noted). Staff and council asked committees to evaluate the practical feasibility and financial modeling for renewables in upcoming meetings.
