Orem Arts Council begins planning 'homecoming' series, compiling list of local artists

The Orem Arts Council discussed plans for a "homecoming" series and an artist-in-residence program intended to reconnect artists with ties to Orem to the local community and provide mentorship opportunities.

At the July meeting, Stephanie (chair) outlined two options: invite artists who grew up in Orem back for performances and mentorships or host influential out-of-state artists temporarily as residents. "Somebody that has clear Orem ties, but who is out doing their work other places, who would be interested in coming back and mentoring and performing or doing a reading' would be marvelous," said Quinn (committee member), endorsing the dual approach. Members suggested workshops, readings, performances and campus visits at nearby UVU as possible formats.

Council members volunteered names for an initial invite list, including Tyler Swain, Liz Lemon Swindle and Eric Dowdle, and discussed modest compensation or travel reimbursement. The group agreed to share and expand the list in the meeting chat and by email; the chair said staff would circulate a compiled roster so members could begin outreach. "If we even got a few of these people, it'd be a huge win," one member said.

Next steps set at the meeting: council members will add names to the shared list, staff will circulate contact information, and members will begin contacting potential residents to determine interest and feasibility. Costs, travel arrangements and potential fundraising were flagged as open logistical items for follow-up.
