Council declares three police handguns surplus to present as retirement gifts

Chief Black explained the department's long-standing practice of recognizing retiring officers with a presentation of their service weapon and a retired badge. He asked the council to declare three handguns surplus property so the department can formally transfer them to retiring employees. "We feel like this is the cleanest way to do this would be to declare these three handguns as surplus... and have them sign a waiver releasing us from any liability," Chief Black said.
Council members supported the practice as a meaningful retirement recognition and approved the resolution by roll call. Staff said recipients will sign liability waivers and the department will finalize the presentation logistics.
