A postdoctoral researcher presenting the sequential-droughts module said climate projections point to a higher frequency of consecutive drought years in low-elevation areas of Eastern Washington. "We have found that in future, in the low elevation areas of Eastern Washington and Columbia River Basin in general are prone to very high number of sequential droughts," the researcher stated.
The module combined climate projections with farmer interviews and field observations to identify how drought impacts compound year-to-year: during severe droughts, fall planting is often reduced, perennial crops can be stressed by reduced irrigation and produce lower yields the following year, and some growers idle high-value crops (hops) to minimize water use but suffer revenue losses. The presenters recommended extending analysis to agricultural and hydrological drought indices and broadening the range of future conditions analyzed so that the full uncertainty and downstream impacts on crops and rural economies are captured.
Speakers stressed that the module's practical focus on growers' responses (rather than only fallowed acres) provides a more nuanced estimate of economic and production impacts and that remote sensing and expanded drought metrics would improve future assessments.
