Edgerton authorizes MOU with KDHE for voluntary stormwater sampling and long-term monitoring

Public Works Director Dan Merkh outlined KDHE's 2024 outreach and sampling in the area and explained that KDHE found agricultural activity and urban point-source discharges have impacted Hillsdale Lake. Although Edgerton has not reached the MS4 population threshold, staff said the proposed MOU would document long-term sampling and maintenance responsibilities and allow the city to coordinate with KDHE on water-quality issues.
Councilmembers asked about the population threshold for mandatory MS4 participation; staff said the trigger is 10,000. Mayor Roberts expressed appreciation for KDHE's work and supported authorizing the MOU once KDHE and the City Attorney complete final reviews. The council voted to authorize the Mayor to sign the MOU subject to those reviews; the motion carried 5-0.
