Road supervisor urges $100,000 maintenance plan for Number 6 Road to curb erosion and safety risks

He said recent work on Puzzle Road and Beach Hill Road addressed recurring washouts, but persistent ditch erosion and over‑wide shoulders remain a safety and maintenance problem. "We had a $100,000 roughly that we kinda have to throw at this thing," Lightbody said, describing a mix of maintenance, ditching and brush cutting he recommended.
Commissioners questioned whether to use calcium chloride as a dust-control measure and how to coordinate with neighboring towns and the Bureau of Parks and Lands. Lightbody suggested a phased approach—gravel and grading before any calcium application—and cautioned that a calcium program requires annual maintenance. Commissioners also discussed parking pads and the possibility of paving heavily used turnout areas to reduce dust and erosion. The board encouraged coordination with Fenwick Construction and with the towns at both ends of the road to develop a spending plan for the remaining funds.
The exchange highlighted tradeoffs between short-term fixes and longer-term upkeep: Lightbody described temporary bridge-style work at Beach Hill Road to ensure emergency access while planners consider more permanent repairs. The commission asked staff to work with the road commissioner and contractor to propose a prioritized plan for the available funds.
