Council declines to accept Mountain Rides' $15,000 funding request; will review in budget

The council reviewed a $15,000 funding request from Mountain Rides Transportation for fiscal year 2027 but did not approve it at the June 8 meeting. Mountain Rides representative Wally Morgas (joining remotely) explained the agency is facing a federal funding cut of roughly $315,000 per year and that ridership overall has fallen, leaving less capacity to expand late-night service.
"Our ridership is down substantially...our federal funding was cut by about $315,000 a year," Morgas said, describing constraints that make adding late-night runs unlikely in the near term.
Council members supported Mountain Rides' core services but debated the prudence of accepting a funding request before the city's budget work sessions. A motion to accept the funding request per Resolution 2619 received no second and therefore failed. Councilmembers said they will consider the $15,000 request during the budget review and that the resolution as drafted was a timestamp of a request, not an immediate budget or contract commitment.
