A public commenter who identified their materials as resolutions adopted by the Texas Silver Hair Legislature described several items the group submitted to the council, including a proposal to reallocate state-collected Medicare fraud recovery funds back into Medicare payments to support rural hospitals.
"Instead of sticking it in the general fund, put it back into the Medicare… pass that money around to rural hospitals, and maybe we can keep some of them from shutting down," the speaker said. The commenter emphasized seniors’ stakes in state policy, noting older Texans are a large voting bloc and that many seniors rely on rural hospitals.
The speaker also provided a flyer for English classes, saying registration starts August 4 and that a three-year grant from the Permian Basin Coalition supports the classes. The council thanked the speaker for the packet and advocacy; no formal council action on the resolutions was recorded at the special meeting.
These public comments were given during the public-comment portion at the meeting’s start and were entered into the record as part of the meeting packet.
