"ISO stands for the insurance services office," Fowler explained, describing the 1–10 grading scale and saying a lower score (closer to 1) is better. He said insurance companies look at a city's ISO rating when writing policies, and a stronger rating can reduce fire insurance premiums for homeowners and businesses while signaling department capability.
Fowler framed the ISO rating as both a community benefit and a measure of operational readiness: "it also gives a representation of that department's capabilities because it's really based on the risk that are in the community...and how prepared that fire department is to respond to those risks."
