Ranking member says GEO-run Delaney Hall tied to deaths; urges oversight

Ranking Member Crockett opened with forceful allegations that GEO Group-operated facilities have produced dangerous outcomes for detainees and have failed to comply with ICE detention standards. She told the subcommittee that "more than 40 people have died while in ICE custody," and said that roughly 30 percent of those deaths occurred at facilities run by GEO Group. She also said courts have admonished GEO-run facilities for "incompetent leadership" and "problematic medical care."
Crockett criticized the hearing organizers for not calling GEO Group or DHS officials to testify and urged independent, unannounced oversight. She suggested campaign contributions from GEO Group to Republican political committees help explain continued contracts and said the committee should "follow the money."
