Eatonville board holds first readings on special education, TK, homelessness and restraint policies

Policy 2161 clarifies that special education services are part of general education first and reinforces a multi-tiered support approach; the presenter said it also clarifies graduation timing for students with IEPs and authorizes district mediation when necessary. The TK transition policy aligns the district to the OSPI transition-to-kindergarten framework and prioritizes enrollment for lowest-income families while ensuring students with disabilities retain access. The graduation-requirements policy edits move operational detail to procedure and clarifies required credits and pathways.
The board discussed a strengthened policy on students experiencing homelessness (31.15) mandating immediate enrollment without records and requiring a district building liaison and best-interest determination meetings with other districts. The restraint and isolation policy (32.46) was reorganized to emphasize student dignity and safety, limit use of restraint/isolation to situations where a student poses a danger, require documentation and establish an annual report to the board on restraint/isolation counts.
Board members asked clarifying questions about graduation counts, assessment timing for TK, and how best-interest meetings will address transportation and credit decisions. Trustees noted that these are first readings and will return for final consideration.
