Committee rejects amendment to expand 'military parole' to parents of service members
Summary
An amendment to add parents of active-duty service members and veterans to the bill's military‑parole category failed in recorded committee votes after Republicans argued existing paths to LPR suffice and Democrats called the exclusion cruel to military families.

An amendment offered by a California member (S11) would have expanded the bill’s military parole category to include parents of active-duty service members, reservists, and veterans. Supporters framed the change as closing an unintended gap that would otherwise deny parents of veterans the parole protections in practice under prior administrations.
Rep. Correa (S11) described multiple local cases in which parents of service members were arrested or deported despite pending parole-in-place applications. "My amendment simply adds parents of active duty service members, reservists, and veterans," he said, recounting specific constituent stories. Republicans opposed the amendment, saying the bill preserves an expedited path to lawful permanent resident status for service members and their immediate families and that prosecutorial and administrative paths remain available; a roll call recorded 14 ayes and 16 noes and the amendment was not adopted.
