"So we we got it with the Kiwanis and the town of Hamden as a joint venture to do that," Schleinger said, explaining the vests are intended to reduce the risk of collisions for people wearing dark clothing. He said officers will carry vests in their patrol vehicles and hand them out when they encounter at-risk pedestrians.
Councilors asked how the vests would be stored and distributed to ensure public access. A staff member apologized for the police chief’s absence and said the chief endorses the program; the staff member said some vests will be kept in police cars and that the town will post distribution information on its website and social media so residents know where to pick them up.
The council did not take a formal vote on the donation; members thanked the Kiwanis for the contribution and discussed next steps for notifying the public.
