Residents tell council missing speed signs and data gaps undermine pilot claim

Multiple residents used the public-comment period to press the council on how the pilot was justified in the packet. Linda Valcourt (205 Memorial Road) said she found no fatalities or serious injuries at the proposed site and questioned the packet’s representation of pedestrian activity. She cited a July 2025 speed study reported in the packet that found drivers traveling about 35 mph where the packet indicated a 25 mph posted limit.
Valcourt also said RSU 22 told her the crosswalk in question is effectively not used by the school and that children are bused to avoid crossing there. She asked why the town could not rely on data from larger nearby installations instead of planting a pilot in every community. Staff responded that crews are identifying missing speed-limit signs for replacement in the coming weeks and reiterated that the pilot is fully grant-funded.
