Resident urges Hamden to publish and regulate driveway standards for emergency access

Betsy Chapman, a resident of King Brook Road, told the planning board at the April 8 meeting that the town should publish clear driveway guidance for emergency-vehicle access and consider regulating very long, narrow private driveways.
Chapman said she researched the National Fire Prevention Code guidance — which she said recommends a 20-foot width, 13.5-foot vertical clearance and adequate turnarounds — and asked that the town make that guidance available at the town office or incorporate standards into local code so residents and developers can find them. She also suggested the board consider regulating driveways above a certain length so fire trucks and ambulances can safely access properties.
Board members thanked Chapman and discussed scheduling further work on driveway standards and other ordinance refinements at a future workshop.
