Chester Williams, the local attorney representing Saint James Baptist Church, urged the Hilton Head Island Planning Commission to approve the master plan amendment and rezoning that would allow the church to relocate to Mid Island Park property.
"I've come November, I'll have been representing Saint James for two decades," Williams said, recounting the church's long history and legal record. He pointed to a recorded plat dated 1922 that shows a church at the congregation's current location and said the airport overlay that followed creates ongoing hazard concerns: "there is a real danger of an airplane dropping out of the sky on top of the church sanctuary when it was full," he said, and recommended approval of the relocation.
Williams's public comment was the only formal public testimony recorded during the hearing. He recommended that the commission approve the town's application and forward it to Town Council; commissioners closed the public hearing before moving the matter to a vote to forward to council.
