Board adopts resolution allowing prepayment of routine claims to avoid late fees

The Michigan City Sanitary District adopted a resolution July 22 authorizing prepayment of routine monthly claims and enabling electronic ACH payments for recurring vendors to avoid late charges.
Wendy (S6), who presented the resolution, said the change allows the controller's office to pay recurring bills (NIPSCO, Comcast, etc.) without waiting for a board meeting. "This resolution is allowing us to have pre authorization, so the controller's office can pay some of these and we can stop accruing late charges," she explained. Attorney Harris described how the claims list will be bifurcated to show pre-approved claims and standard claims so board oversight is retained.
The board moved and approved the resolution by voice vote. Staff said all prepayments will still appear on the claims document for transparency; the change is intended to save time and reduce late fees.
