The Michigan City Sanitary District on July 22 approved a one-year joint funding agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey to maintain the Trail Creek stream gauge at a cost to the district of $16,500; USGS will contribute an additional $3,400.
Watts (district engineer) reviewed monitoring results and rainfall figures, telling commissioners that May brought about 1.48 inches of rain while June measured 8.78 inches and that the gauge recorded rapid stage increases. "In May of this year, we had 1.48 inches of rain. In June, we had 8.78," he said, noting the gauge also supports recreational users and regional tourism.
Staff said the expense was budgeted in the stormwater account and that the gauge provides data used for system analysis and public information; the board moved and approved the renewal by voice vote.
