Director of security outlines Sachem’s 2026–27 safety plan at public hearing

Wayne Wilson, the district director of security, presented the Sachem Central School District’s 2026–27 districtwide safety plan during a July 22 public hearing. "Our primary primary objective is to ensure the safety of all students, staff members, and visitors while maintaining a conducive and welcoming school environment," Wilson said, and described the plan’s emphasis on preparedness, prevention, response and recovery.

Wilson told the board the plan follows New York State emergency‑response terminology and includes annual drills (evacuation, lockdown, shelter in place), mental‑health referral pathways, quarterly reviews, and coordination with Suffolk County Police. He said building‑level emergency response plans are kept confidential "to safeguard the safety of our students, staff, and our facilities," while the districtwide plan will be available for public review and comment for at least 30 days prior to board approval.

Board members asked for specifics about changes in this year’s plan; Wilson said some security upgrades were completed in‑house and suggested closed session for operational details that could compromise security if discussed publicly. The board closed the public hearing after the presentation and returned to its regular meeting agenda. The plan’s public‑comment period and the scheduled board action were presented as the next steps.
