Police chief reports 269 calls and two community foundation awards

Police Chief David Pernice told the council the department logged 269 calls from June 1 through Aug. 13, averaging roughly 3.63 calls per day, with incidents ranging from vehicle pursuits and warrants to domestic incidents, drug activity and homelessness. He said some calls can occupy a full shift and noted several recent incidents involving suicide and mental-health responses.
Chief Pernice said he and Officer Shelly attended Alert Active Shooter training on July 24–25 hosted by Millcreek Police Department and described the sessions as beneficial. He also reported applying to the UC Community Foundation for funding for four tasers and additional security cameras; the foundation awarded both requests.
The chief expressed appreciation that council approved hiring a part-time officer earlier in the meeting, saying additional personnel will help the department manage high-call days and lengthy incidents.
