Union City Borough Council voted Aug. 13 to hire Kenneth Fye from the certified civil service list as a part-time police officer. The motion, made by Councilor Matt Joyce and seconded by Councilor Osborn, carried unanimously.
Mayor Robert Wolf told the council it is important to maintain a police department in the borough and recommended hiring a part-time officer to preserve coverage without the full cost of a full-time hire. Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the borough budget had allowed at least $33,560 for wages and benefits; the final cost for a part-time hire will depend on the number of hours worked. Councilors Riley Cross and Matt Joyce said part-time staffing would provide additional coverage with lower payroll impact.
The hire came from the certified civil service list the borough uses for police appointments. Kenneth Fye will be employed as a part-time officer; the council did not specify a start date in the meeting minutes. The council’s action followed an earlier executive session on personnel held from 6:04–6:23 p.m.
