Council approves phased cattail removal and replanting plan for Pelican Lake

After a consultant update and resident input, council approved phased physical removal of large cattail stands, replanting of shoreline with native species and a small bullrush island, with costs and timing estimated by the consultant.
Professor Sean Patton gave a multi‑year status update on Pelican Lake including recent cattail removals, bird‑diversity monitoring, algae management and options to reduce maintenance burden while preserving habitat. He said smaller native bulrush and littoral plantings can preserve sight lines and habitat while reducing invasive cattail maintenance.
Council heard resident support for a phased approach, and a motion to approve phased physical removal of the large cattail clump, immediate shoreline planting, retention of a small fringe of cattails for nesting and the creation of a modest bullrush island passed 4–0. Consultant estimates included roughly $10,009.50 for removal of the large clump and about $1,300 for Waterside shoreline plantings; staff confirmed funds were available in the current fiscal year and will coordinate timing and environmental checks.
