Donated life rings debated; council approves two for Pelican Lake as pilot

Sarah Perry, founder of the Aiden Perry Hero LifeRing Initiative, described donations of more than 700 rings to municipalities and schools and said the foundation can provide the first 10 rings and ropes at no charge. She told council the devices are simple to install on a post with a rope and sign, and that the initiative pairs installations with community demonstrations.
Council asked technical questions about rope length, tide measurement and permit limits during turtle nesting season. One council member said beach walkovers may be too distant from surf zones for effective use on ocean beaches, while others supported a pilot. A motion to accept the full inventory for beach installation failed on a 2–2 vote; council subsequently approved accepting two rings for Pelican Lake as a pilot program, 4–0. Council directed staff to coordinate placement and public education if the Pelican Lake pilot proceeds.
