City Administrator Joe Taylor and Council Member Terry McWilliams raised the potential financial impacts of modifying Mount Pleasant's fireworks ordinance during the June 24 Ordinance Committee meeting. The minutes record staff and council members discussing enforcement and budget considerations as part of the ordinance review.
Police Chief Lyle Murray expressed support for reducing the number of permitted hours per day for fireworks on dates where local limits remain allowed by state law. Committee members acknowledged, however, that a change in Iowa law effective July 1, 2026 constrains municipal authority on July 3, July 4 and New Year's Eve, including preventing municipalities from imposing local time restrictions on those protected dates. The Committee did not adopt local time limits for those dates and instead recommended aligning the local ordinance with the statutory limitations.
