Parks staff requested council permission to apply for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Community Parks and Playgrounds FY2028 grant to fund a shade structure at Wheaton Park. Derek Dike told the council the grant is a 100% award with no required local match and said the program is competitive; the department receives many requests and decisions can take about 10 months.
"This is pretty straightforward. I'm just asking permission to apply for the grant... It's a 100% grant. There's no match on our part," Dike said. He noted the county and other municipalities also apply and that the city was not funded in the prior round; he asked the council for permission to submit an application now and to return with a formal motion later in the month to authorize the project if the city is asked to accept an award.
