City awards multiple pavement contracts, schedules Browning Avenue closure through summer

The City Commission on May 5 approved contracts for three pavement projects that will affect arterials and collectors this summer, awarding low bids for a KDOT‑funded CCLIP mill/overlay on Fort Riley Boulevard, full‑depth concrete reconstruction on Browning and Butterfield, and an asphalt maintenance package.
Public Works Director Brian Johnson explained the KDOT CCLIP project will be reimbursed at up to an 80/20 cost share and that the city pays costs up front and seeks reimbursement. He also summarized bidder responses: Schilling was the low bid on the CCLIP mill/overlay at roughly $300,000; Cheney and Colby were low bidders on concrete maintenance packages; Bayer was low on an asphalt package totaling about $940,000.
"We're gonna be somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.4 to 3.5 million prior to our reimbursement," Johnson said, and he warned of lane closures and schedule impacts, noting a target reopening date for Browning Avenue of Aug. 7 to restore lanes before elementary school begins.
Commissioners approved a motion to award the three projects in a single vote, 5–0. Staff noted reimbursements from KDOT and project phasing will affect near‑term cash flow and that additional task orders remain under bid.
