City awards bids for pavement program; Browning Avenue to close for reconstruction this summer

The commission approved contracts on May 5 for multiple spring and summer pavement projects and heard schedule and traffic impacts from Public Works Director Brian Johnson.
Johnson reported a successful KDOT CCLIP award (an 80/20 cost‑share mill and overlay on Fort Riley Boulevard; low bid roughly $285,000) plus concrete maintenance group projects and an asphalt maintenance package. He estimated the city’s pre‑reimbursement outlay would be roughly $3.4–3.5 million for the combined work and said the CCLIP project is reimbursed by KDOT (the city pays upfront then requests reimbursement). "We're gonna be somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.4 to 3,500,000 prior to our reimbursement," Johnson said, and warned that Browning Avenue (between Dickens and Claflin) will be closed for a substantial portion of the summer while full‑depth concrete work takes place.
Commissioners approved the three projects by roll call vote, 5–0. Staff said KDOT-certified inspection and other requirements apply to the grant project and that scheduling aimed to reopen major corridors before the school year.
