Commission authorizes RFQ for Sunset Zoo phase 2; ZooTrust commits $8.25 million

The Manhattan City Commission authorized city administration to issue a request for qualifications and proposals for a construction manager at risk for the Sunset Zoo Phase 2 project, which will include a ring‑tailed lemur exhibit, an interactive Sunset Barnyard and Trail of Americas exhibits.
Aaron Stewart, director of parks and recreation, told the commission the zoo trust has committed up to $8,250,000 to fund the phase and staff expects to advertise the RFQ/RFP on April 10, accept submissions through May 13 and bring a recommendation on June 2. “The Sunset Zoological Park and Wildlife Conservation Trust has committed funding for that project up to $8,250,000,” Stewart said.
Stewart described the phase as the next step in a four‑phase master plan and noted planned site improvements such as ADA walkways, utilities and an interactive barnyard to provide educational experiences. Commissioners congratulated the zoo on its recent five‑year accreditation and noted the project is funded by the trust; the commission voted 5–0 to authorize the solicitation.
