"Now, therefore, I Nicholas Abowasily, mayor of the city of Marion, Iowa, do hereby proclaim July 2026 as park and recreation month in the city of Marion," the mayor said while reading the proclamation. The proclamation cited parks' contributions to public health, education and local economic prosperity.
An agency representative from Marion Parks and Recreation accepted the proclamation and thanked the council for its support, noting the year's theme and the department's efforts to provide welcoming public spaces. "This year's theme, the power of celebrates the power of play, connection, nature, and community," the staff member said, thanking the council for continued support.
The item was presented at the start of the meeting as part of the council's opening announcements. City leaders and staff used the occasion to highlight volunteer contributions and community programs such as the Encore Cafe for older adults and other seasonal events.
