DeKalb announces $1,000,000 investment aimed at curbing tire dumping

An agency official told the forum that DeKalb County has cleared large, organized tire-dumping operations in the past and is now turning to a front-end solution. “DeKalb County is investing roughly 1000000 dollars, and this is just what it means to us,” the Agency official said, announcing an investment to create collection and recycling options so residents and businesses can bring tires rather than have them illegally dumped.
The official recounted that during the first year of office a coordinated cleanup removed over 40,000 illegally dumped tires and described enforcement actions against haulers who were paid to dispose of tires but instead dumped them. The proposed program aims to reduce the county’s cleanup costs — officials estimated small tire-dump cleanups can cost over $50,000 and large dumps over $100,000 — by providing alternatives and by pursuing stronger enforcement against organized dumpers.
