Dayton board eliminates student participation fees for 2025–26, citing equity and access

The Dayton School Board voted Aug. 12 to eliminate sports participation fees, technology security deposits, instrument rental fees and certain course fees for the 2025–26 school year. The motion was moved by Director Chris Wytoski, seconded by Director Kraig Albright, and recorded as carried 6-0.
Superintendent Dr. Amy Fast recommended removing the fees, saying that "pay-to-play" does not align with district core values and noting that fees currently bring in about $15,000 but that removing barriers could increase attendance-based funding (ADM). Board members discussed alternative funding approaches including Booster Club support, donation models and hardship waivers with family caps and "Try It Free" proposals for certain grade levels.
