Town Manager Stephen Lawson told Council that a recent reassessment by Wise County affects the town's tax base and eligibility to change the real estate tax rate.
Lawson said the reassessment made the town eligible to increase by 1% without a public hearing, and that keeping the current $0.44 rate would push the town above that threshold given recent assessment changes. He noted rising minimum wage and a proposed cost-of-living raise for employees as budget pressures.
Amanda L. Hawkins, Town Clerk/Treasurer, said she would publish notice for a public hearing to consider maintaining the $0.44 rate; the hearing is set for May 19 at 6:30 p.m. The Council agreed to hold the public hearing and no formal vote on the tax rate was recorded at the workshop.
The public hearing provides an opportunity for residents to comment before Council takes any decision on the tax rate.
