Town updates progress on sidewalks, utilities, skate park and other local projects

Town Manager Stephen Lawson and Town Engineer Matthew Lane provided multiple project updates on Feb. 10. Lane told Council the Proctor Street sidewalk project has a very accelerated schedule from VDOT, and he said East Stone Gap utilities design work is close to finished. The Hospital Watershed design is complete but the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has raised issues related to funding that must be resolved before the project moves forward.
Lawson said right‑of‑entry documentation is being finalized for a sidewalk to connect the Library, the Museum and Bullitt Park; once the paperwork is complete VDOT will give the town an environmental timeline and measurements needed to start the work. Staff also said work should begin before the next Council meeting on a sidewalk from 2nd Street to 1st Street depending on weather. Estimates for skate‑park additions (connectivity to Bullitt Park, seating, fountains, shade sails, landscaping and fencing) were expected by the end of the week. Speed‑safety signs have been ordered and are anticipated to arrive within six weeks.
