Town Engineer: East Stone Gap improvements design complete, advertising planned next month

Town Engineer Matthew Lane told the Big Stone Gap Town Council on May 12 that the East Stone Gap Comprehensive Improvements design is completed and is under "a QAQC review" with the goal of placing the project out for advertisement next month.
Lane said the work on East Stone Gap is one of several utility and infrastructure projects the town is advancing. "System Wide Water Loss Improvements Project Phase III has been designed and is waiting on a parity review from Rural Development and the Town audit need completion so that VRA can approve advertising that Project," he said, noting that similar audit requirements affect the Ballad Hospital sewer-shed improvements project.
The update gave council members a timeline for next steps: QA/QC clearance and then advertisement, followed by procurement and the construction timeline set by the winning bid. Council did not take a formal vote on the East Stone Gap design at the meeting; the item was presented as an engineering update and next steps will depend on state and federal partner approvals and completion of the town audit.
The council’s material packet listed the East Stone Gap Comprehensive Improvements as part of the town’s capital work plan; Council members asked staff to continue coordinating with funding agencies and to return with procurement schedules once the advertisement is released.
