Commission backs AIM Field Hockey practice facility at 1220 North Price Road

The Planning and Community Design Commission on July 23 voted to forward a recommendation to City Council for a special permit allowing AIM Field Hockey to operate an indoor practice facility in Suite 4 at 1220 North Price Road.
Carlos Trejo, planning director, described the building as a large former manufacturing structure with multiple tenants and emphasized the need to clarify entry points, parking flow and landscape and lighting improvements to protect adjacent residential properties. He also noted the unique interior layout and mezzanine areas that present circulation questions.
Chris Paul, broker representative for AIM Field Hockey, said the operation focuses on small-group training rather than full-team play; "the big space on the left... is 4,400 feet," he said, and the typical number of people on site at one time would be about ten. Developer Jim Summers and the owner representative said fencing repairs have been made on parts of the property and that new owners plan further improvements as cash flow allows.
Commissioners repeatedly raised lighting and safety as conditions; staff said it will work with the petitioner and property owner to review a landscape plan and circulation to ensure safe ingress and egress. The commission approved forwarding the petition for site plan, community design and concept stormwater review and will send the item to City Council for an Aug. 25 public hearing.
