The Elgin School District board took a first reading of a proposed revision to policy JFCA (Dress and Appearance) at its Sept. 16 meeting. The draft sets minimum standards covering health and safety, prohibits clothing or accessories that display racial or ethnic slurs, gang symbols or sexually suggestive content, and requires that undergarments remain covered. The policy also allows building administrators to make limited exceptions for spirit days or field trips and requires reasonable religious accommodations.
The draft lists specifics including: no attire that presents a health or safety hazard, no promotion of products students cannot legally buy, and a prohibition on overly revealing clothing (midriff and undergarments must be covered; shorts/skirts must reach mid-thigh). The board did not take final action; members asked that the revision be published in advance of subsequent readings to allow review.
