Council honors Fire Chief David Ray after more than 33 years of service

Council adopted R-38-26, a resolution honoring Fire Chief David Ray for more than three decades of service to the Cortland community. The resolution notes Ray’s hiring in 1993 with the Mazzetta Cortland Joint EMS District, his promotion to city fire chief on Aug. 19, 2013, and department expansions under his leadership, including a new fire truck in 2020 and planning for a safety services complex expected in late 2027 or early 2028.
Members praised Ray’s long service and thanked him for mentoring staff. The council invited Chief Ray to come forward for ceremonial recognition and indicated a later public swearing and reception will occur; cake for the occasion was noted following adjournment.
