Mount Vernon to apply for IDNR development grant to rebuild Veterans Park recreation area

Mount Vernon will apply for an Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant to redevelop part of Veterans Park, Parks Director McKenzie May told the council on July 6. The project would remove a deteriorated inline skate area, restore two regulation basketball courts and add a skate park on a neighboring lot. The grant application opened July 1 and closes Aug. 31; awards are expected to be announced by Jan. 2, 2027.
May said $37.5 million in total funding will be available statewide and that, because the city already has access to the property, it will submit a development project application rather than an acquisition request. The maximum award for a development project is $600,000; the city would have two years to complete the project if funded. Council authorized submitting the application.
