DeKalb Office of Aging details senior centers, in‑home services and new Dementia Café

Charlotte Newton Danieley, who oversees home- and community-based services under the county’s Office of Aging, outlined neighborhood senior centers and services that promote independence for people 60 and older. "With our mission, we promote the independence, dignity, and well-being of older adults and their families," she said.
Newton Danieley listed the neighborhood senior centers (North DeKalb/Chamblee-Tucker; DeKalb Atlanta/West Side; Candler Road/South DeKalb; East DeKalb Community & Senior Center on Bruce Street in Lithonia) and three multipurpose centers including Central DeKalb on McConnell Drive, East DeKalb in Stone Mountain and the Lou Walker Senior Center in Stonecrest. She said centers offer congregate meals, fitness classes and programs that reduce social isolation.
The office also described in-home services—case management, personal care, homemaker services, respite care—and a Dementia Café for residents dealing with memory loss. Newton Danieley said long-term care and dementia needs are primarily addressed through in-home or specialized adult‑day programs rather than neighborhood senior centers.
