State officials said federal Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) status was approved for the Aqua Butte fire and explained the program's cost‑sharing provisions.
"FMAG stands for Fire Management Assistance Grant, which allows us to have federal government pick up 75% of the cost, and we pick up 25% of the cost," the agency official said. Officials added the state is seeking FMAG for at least one other large complex, the Rogue River complex, and that total season costs will depend on how federal support is allocated.
Officials noted the approval of FMAG is an important financial tool but said suppression costs will still be significant and that the legislature will need to address funding in the months ahead. The briefing did not include dollar totals for projected suppression costs.
