The Rahway Valley Sewage Authority on the record described a renewable natural gas (RNG) project that will condition on‑site digester biogas to pipeline‑quality methane and inject it into the South Jersey Industries pipeline.
John Bonacore, RVSA executive director and chief engineer, told the public hearing the project "turns a byproduct of the wastewater treatment into a clean energy source," saying the process includes compressors, hydrogen sulfide and siloxane removal vessels and a Galileo ZS skid to produce pipeline‑quality methane.
Presenters said the installation will include a gas chromatograph and an RVSA metering station, with a candlestick flare used only during upset conditions or startup. Bonacore said the project will also increase the facility's resiliency: staff estimate it could allow the plant to run in "true island mode" and operate independently for about 30 days.
The authority described the change as beneficial reuse of existing biogas, reducing on‑site flaring and supporting RVSA's energy recovery goals. South Jersey Industries will receive and transport the conditioned gas from the on‑site metering station to its pipeline, presenters said.
The hearing record indicates the project converts existing on‑site fuel into a cleaner product but does not add new long‑term diesel engines; presenters said there are no reportable hazardous air pollutant increases associated with the modification.
