Board adopts new student e-bike and nonlicensed vehicle policies, citing safety concerns

The Wentzville R-IV board voted to adopt new policies (26-51 and 52-26) governing student use of e-bikes, motorized scooters and other nonlicensed motorized devices on district property.
District staff explained the policy is intended to improve safety after multiple incidents and near-misses. "This is a strictly safety procedure here," Brian said, adding that the goal is to "increase safety" rather than to punish students. Staff described coordination with building administrators, night security guards and local authorities to enforce signage and building-level plans.
Board members asked for clarification on enforcement and whether the policies were intended to apply to licensed drivers or to parent usage of golf carts on school property. Staff said the policy is not meant to prohibit a licensed driver from bringing a golf cart to a Friday-night game and emphasized the focus is on nonlicensed drivers and off-hours safety. "It doesn't mean that a parent or a licensed driver can't bring their golf cart to a Friday night game or park on the parking lot," Brian said.
Following questions about how enforcement will be handled at secondary sites and how disciplinary consequences will be applied, the board voted and adopted the policies by voice vote.
