Nance County faces $286,000 budget shortfall; road and sheriff lines targeted for reductions

County budget officer SuAnn Gabel told the board the county's budget is "short $286,000" for the upcoming fiscal year and walked supervisors through transfers and smaller-office budgets.
Gabel outlined proposed savings in the Road Department that include reducing the pickups line item by $57,000, gravel/rock by $25,000, traffic sign/posts by $5,000, new machinery by $20,000 (with $18,000 of that reallocated into radio equipment), machine hire by $5,000 and overtime by $25,000. The Sheriff's Department proposal includes a $15,000 reduction in payment for comp time. Gabel said the sheriff and highway superintendent would discuss additional ideas to reduce spending later in the meeting.
The board did not vote to adopt or finalize the budget changes at the July 14 meeting; the items were presented for review and will be subject to further action in upcoming sessions. The presentation and line-item figures were taken from the budget handout provided to the board.
