Residents urge stepped-up enforcement and calming measures for Elm Street speeding

In public comment, Paul Zadnis of 808 N. Elm described ongoing speeding in the area and asked council members to increase enforcement. Resident Doreen Stelton raised related worries about truck traffic through the Village and requested clarification on truck-route activity. Scott Cedro, who lives near the village limits, urged proactive safety measures, warning "before a serious accident occurs," and Tom Pauley reported a knocked-down light pole with exposed wiring at Linden and Elm that requires repair.
Council members heard those concerns during the public-comment portion of the meeting and later discussed enforcement tools. Police Chief Krause reported the department is conducting traffic enforcement using both radar and recently acquired handheld lidar equipment. Krause also noted one patrol vehicle was temporarily out of service for recall repairs and that recruitment for an additional officer is underway.
Council did not adopt a new traffic-control ordinance at the meeting; instead, the discussion outlined next steps: continued enforcement by the police department and further consideration of long-term calming options, with county jurisdiction over some speed limits noted by a commenter. Residents asked for clearer information on truck routing and for the Village to address the exposed wiring reported near Linden and Elm.
Council members did not set a specific follow-up date for additional traffic measures during the May 13 meeting. The next regular council meeting is June 10, 2026.
