The Selectboard reviewed the preferred alternative for West Street sidewalk scoping and discussed several design adjustments, including the possibility of moving the southern end of the western crosswalk to create an angled walkway and removing one end of a u-shaped driveway to improve alignment and safety.
Planning and Zoning Administrator AZ Larsen and consultant Evan Haugh answered board questions about storm drain constraints that may affect crosswalk relocation and described the multiple safety and functional benefits of the proposed crosswalk location. The board also discussed parking orientation in front of the Post Office; it was noted that VTrans prefers angled parking for safety reasons. AZ reported contact with Champlain Farms regarding the mountable sidewalk and curbed buffer proposed in front of the store.
Board members suggested adding a sidewalk connection from the project sidewalk to the accessible entrance at Holley Hall; staff advised that this connection cannot be included in the funded portion of the current project and therefore will require separate funding if pursued. The center section of the project will retain existing sidewalk where width and location meet code and repair only where necessary.
No formal vote was recorded on design changes at the meeting; staff indicated a phasing and design follow-up will proceed as the project moves toward final plans.
