Bobby O'Brien, speaking for the Rome Waterways and Trails Advocacy Group, told the council he “would like to ask the council to support 2 of the resolutions that are on tonight's agenda,” and said the Canalway and Brownfields proposals would help remediate blighted properties and expand recreational areas. “These funds will help Rome to continue mitigating blight,” O'Brien said, urging the council to back the applications.
The council did not debate the grant in detail at the meeting; the clerk read the resolution language and the council approved it by voice vote. The authorization permits the mayor’s office to prepare and submit the application to the state agencies; the grant, if awarded, would fund construction of Phase 1 of the Muck Road boat launch as described in the posted agenda materials. The council did not set additional local matching requirements or a project schedule during the meeting.
President Nash presided over the vote and confirmed the authorization passed. The next formal steps are the mayor's office submitting the application and any subsequent contract approvals if the city is awarded funds.
