Committee advances H 531 to update epinephrine administration in schools; parents and nurses urge broader glucose testing

Rep. Josh Wheeler presented H 531 to align Idaho statute with current and evolving epinephrine administering systems being used in schools. Rep. Healey moved to send H 531 to the floor with a DO PASS recommendation.
Three supporters spoke during the committee record. Brittany Shipley testified in support and requested a broadening of blood glucose testing parameters so children with illnesses not explicitly listed could attend school safely. Alicia Jordan, a registered school nurse and member of the National Board of School Nurses, described current nasal epinephrine delivery and potential sublingual systems. Alexis Morgan, Idaho PTA Director of Public Policy, said that removing current restrictions “will allow better emergency response in the schools” and “will also eliminate stress for individuals who dislike needles.”
In closing remarks, Rep. Wheeler said he was unaware of the limited glucose testing issue and preferred to pursue additional legislation rather than modify H 531 at this time. Chairman Vander Woude called for a voice vote to send H 531 to the floor with a DO PASS recommendation; the motion carried by voice vote and Rep. Wheeler will sponsor the bill on the floor.
