The Idaho House Health & Welfare Committee voted to approve Docket No. 16-0210-2501, a Department of Health and Welfare (DHW) rule package on reportable diseases, during its Feb. 3, 2026 meeting. Rep. McCann moved to approve the docket and Vice Chairman Erickson called for the voice vote, which carried.
Dr. Christine Hahn, the Idaho State Epidemiologist, clarified that "a physician would report a suspected disease prior to laboratory testing confirmation in order to provide the appropriate response or isolation time," providing the rationale for mandatory early reporting to speed public-health responses. Jared Larsen, DHW chief of staff, presented the docket to the committee on behalf of the department.
The committee discussion focused on the timing and purpose of reporting; the motion to approve passed by voice vote. The committee returned the gavel to Chairman Vander Woude after the vote and moved on to other items on the agenda.
